Both former capitals of Thailand, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya are brimming with temples and buildings of religious significance and a peaceful calm prevails as one wanders around the ruins. Ayutthaya is within easy reach of Bangkok by either boat or road and can be combined with a visit to Kanchanaburi, site of the notorious Death Railway and the bridge over the River Kwai. At nearby Nakhon Pathom, Thailand's largest chedi stands 127m high.
