Few travellers can fail to be charmed by the majestic nation of Ecuador and one of the most enthralling aspects of the Central American country - its wildlife.

Much of the landscape is dominated by volcanoes, which tower over villages and towns across the country and have long been a source of fascination for foreign adventurers.

Its hugely varied terrain also plays host to huge expanses of rainforest which house some of the most diverse creatures on the planet.

So valued is Ecuador's wildlife that earlier this month a project was launched to allow bird enthusiasts to get that bit closer to life in the jungle without disturbing its inhabitants.

Backed by Sir David Attenborough, the World Land Trust's Webcam in the Forest project has seen a tiny camera installed at a feeder for hummingbirds, which films the exquisite birds as they eat.

But although the camera can give some sense of the rainforests of Ecuador, it is no replacement for the sights and sounds of the real thing and travellers are urged to head there for the trip of a lifetime.

Ecuador is also just a stone's throw away from the ever-intriguing Galapagos Islands, whose wildlife prompted Charles Darwin to form his theory of evolution back in 1835.
