Welcome+Botswana's+flamingos+home
Thinking about the wildlife in Botswana generally conjures up images of elephants, lions and giraffes.

But perhaps one of the most stunning sites that can be captures in this magnificent country is the roosting of thousands of flamingos at the Makgadikgadi Pans.

From the end of the rainy season, these regal birds flock to the ancient dried up lake to lay their eggs, creating a carpet of pink feathers.

Wildlife enthusiasts have plenty of other birds to entertain them with pelicans, cranes and all kinds of ducks and geese also swooping in to roost in early March.

Only the most adventurous of travellers head for the Pans, however, as it is a wilderness offering next to nothing in terms of luxury.

But those that do make their way to the clay-covered region are witnesses to the rare site of a terrain that has lain virtually untouched for thousands of years.

Earlier this month, it was reported that lesser flamingos had begun breeding on an artificial island which has been built in South Africa.

The Northern Cape Department of Tourism, Environment & Conservation said that the birds had roosted on Kamfers Dam – one of just six lesser flamingo breeding grounds in the world.ADNFCR-1391-ID-18448750-ADNFCR
