A festival focusing on sustainable environmental tourism was launched in Oman yesterday, according to reports.
Salalah Tourism Festival 2008 began on Tuesday at the Al Murooj Amphitheatre in Salalah with government ministers attending the opening ceremony of the festival which aims to promote tourism in Oman.
The 45 day festival will incorporate a range of cultural events and artistic and musical activities under the banner of 'Family Gathering' with a focus on the concept of sustainable environmental tourism.
Visitors to the festival will be able to witness some of Oman's rural heritage with shows displaying the authentic techniques of ancient handicraft such as artwork, cookery, and furniture making.
The importance of environmental conservation has been taken from the knowledge that Sultan Qaboos holds the environment of Oman in high regard.
Around 241,000 tourists have visited the Dhofar region so far to take part in the festival's activities, according to statistical reports.
