The Galapagos have been named as the top island destination in the world in a recent survey.

Reuters Life! reported that a new poll conducted by Travel + Leisure magazine found that readers were drawn to the islands for both nature and adventure travel.

Subscribers to the magazine were invited to select from their favourite travel destinations, which also included Bangkok, Thailand, as a favourite city.

Last year, the survey found that the Galapagos ranked number eight in the category of best island.

The Galapagos islands boast a wide variety of unique animal life.

Flightless cormorants, marine iguanas, sea lions, flamingos, waved albatrosses, dolphins, rays, seals and the famed giant Galapagos tortoises can all be seen by visitors seeking an island holiday adventure.

In addition, a total of 13 species of Darwin finches can be observed on the islands, as well as the world's only seagoing lizards.

Science enthusiasts may be particularly interested in the Darwin research station, where they can interact with animals and the scientists who study them.
