Expert+calls+for+UNESCO+protection+of+temple

An archaeologist has called for the protection of a spectacular ancient temple which straddles both Cambodia and Thailand.

Srisakra Vallibhotama of the Lek-Prapai Foundation is urging officials to nominate the Preah Vihear temple as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Yet to be completely restored, this temple is a delight to travellers with numerous spectacular carvings and lintels.

Surrounded by the beautiful Khao Phra Wihan National Park, the temple is a must-see for holidaymakers.

But the ancient building is situated on the borders of both countries, making it difficult to manage and concerns have been raised that protection efforts are being left in limbo.

Speaking during a debate on Radio Australia, Mr Vallibhotama said: "We should join forces in order to make the temple be World Heritage."

He added that it was important that not only that the temple be protected but also the communities that live in its surrounding area.

By letting UNESCO manage the site, both Cambodia and Thailand can benefit, Mr Vallibhotama said.

Located at the top of a 525m cliff in the Dangrek Mountains, Preah Vihear was built in the sixth century and has stunning views across north-east Thailand from the top.ADNFCR-1391-ID-18647665-ADNFCR
