South-east Asia's longest river, the Mekong, is the subject of a new photographic exhibition which opened earlier this month.

Travellers will be able to view the display of shots taken by Reinhard Hohler on an expedition which started in China before heading into Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia, before ending in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

The exhibition, held in the Sofitel Centara Grand in Bangkok, includes 72 pictures by the 57-year-old who has spent much of his life touring the region.

According to a press release, the exhibition "attempts to give the visitor an in-depth perspective on the different geographical, historical and economic aspects of the Mekong River, which runs through the heart of Indo-China".

The Mekong area's huge size allows it one of the richest biodiversities in the world. More than 1,200 species of fish have been identified as living in the river although some claim there could be up to 1,700.

Also making their home here are freshwater dolphins, and specifically, the Irrawaddy dolphin.

However, this once populous species has now become critically endangered. ADNFCR-1391-ID-18640749-ADNFCR
