What is believed to be the largest Chinese cemetery outside of the country has been nominated as a World Heritage Site.
Bukit China, located in the Malaysian state of Malacca, is in the running to gain heritage status which, if successful, will see officials receive funding to help it remain protected and well maintained.
Chief minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said: "Besides being recognised as the largest Chinese cemetery outside of China, the hill was also the site of the ruins of a 16th Century Portuguese monastery.
"This will mean that the hill will now be preserved. Any proposed development must be subject to approval from the relevant conservation agencies."
The cemetery contains some 12,000 graves with the oldest dating back to the early 17th century.
It joins a number of historical sites in Asia which could be named as World Heritage Sites when the World Heritage Council decides on the bids next month.
Among these are several locations along the ancient Silk Road including a selection of tombs, remains of ancient cities and grottoes.
